We all remember when Paris dropped that sustainability bomb on us with the 2024 Olympics? They swore to cut carbon emissions by a whopping 50% compared to London 2012 and Rio 2016. Spoiler alert: They kinda pulled it off, but not without some serious drama.
The Olympic Village was like a hipster’s wet dream of sustainability. We’re talking 14,000 athletes chowing down on locally sourced, organic grub. French farmers went hard, supplying ingredients for 13 million meals. The best part? They slashed carbon emissions by half, mostly by going plant-based and keeping it local. It was like a massive, sweaty farmers market.
Paris didn’t mess around with transportation. They pimped out their public transit and made cycling the new cool. Electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles were the VIPs of Olympic transport. And get this: 80% of venues were within a 10km radius of the Olympic Village. Talk about a compact party!
In a move that had tech nerds and eco-warriors high-fiving, they crafted Olympic medals from recycled electronics. Yep, your ancient iPhone might’ve been part of someone’s gold medal. They even threw in some Eiffel Tower scraps for that extra Parisian flex.
Unlike previous Olympics that were all about new, shiny stadiums, Paris kept it real with 95% pre-existing or temporary venues. The new Aquatics Centre? Solar-powered and built with recycled plastic and wood. It’s like if IKEA designed an Olympic pool.
Paris 2024 aimed to be “climate positive,” which is like saying they’d leave the planet cleaner than they found it. Ambitious? Hell yeah. Realistic? Well, that’s where things got messy. They had to ditch buzzwords like “climate-positive” and “carbon-neutral” after sustainability experts called BS.
So, did Paris 2024 change the game or just play us? The jury’s still out, but one thing’s for sure: they set the bar high for future mega-events. Whether it’s a lasting green legacy or just a flash in the pan, Paris 2024 definitely got people talking about sustainability in sports.
Paris 2024 proved that you can throw a global rager without trashing the place. But it also showed that going green isn’t all smooth sailing. Future event organizers, take note: sustainability is cool, but keeping it real is cooler. In the end, Paris 2024 was like that friend who swears they’re vegan but still eats cheese sometimes. They tried, they stumbled, but they might’ve just changed the game. Only time will tell if this green Olympics was the real deal or just another greenwashing party trick.

In an age where humans have taken over control of vast pieces of land—about half of the earth’s habitable land is used for agriculture[1]—we can formulate a new concept: The planet is what we plant. The other half of the habitable land is composed of forest, shrub, as well as urban and built-up land. The latter only accounts for 1%, although it is the part we spend the most time in.
Farmland comes in many forms and shapes. A staggering three-quarters of the agricultural area is used for livestock, including both grazing and animal feed production. It is hard not to marvel at the sheer scale of agricultural sites when flying over them in a plane. But it is important to keep in mind that this massive expansion in agricultural land use has happened quite recently. While 2000 years ago the total farming area was below 0.5 billion hectares, it is now approaching 5 billion hectares. As you may imagine, many of these farms are not operated in an ecological and sustainable way, which has been part of the success story of feeding the global population with increasing efficiency (i.e., decrease in land required per person has dropped from 1.2 to 0.6 over the past 50 years[2]). However, this comes at the cost of biodiversity due to the use of pesticides and monoculture, and a negative impact on the climate. Especially the increased cattle farming has led to a sharp increase in the atmosphere’s methane levels, a greenhouse gas 78 times more potent than CO2 on a 20-year scale, which has contributed to a third of the global warming observed to date[3].
Every single one of our daily choices affects how land use will change in the years to come. Walking to the supermarket or shopping for groceries online is like going to the ballot and casting a vote for how our future planet is going to be cultivated.
At the same time, our food choices affect our personal well-being, health, cognitive performance, and so much more. Why do we hear so little about this on the news? Quite simply, making a change can be painful in the beginning, but you will end up with something much more valuable in the end. We at Alter believe that these two things—health of the body and planet—align very well and can be pursued with every choice we make. Let us alter our choices together so we can alter the planet!

The post The Juicy Truth About Organic Coconuts first appeared on Alter 🍏.

Attention, coconut enthusiasts! Let’s crack open the debate: organic coconuts versus their non-organic cousins. Get ready, because we’re diving into the science of this tropical favorite. Coconut water is a natural, fat-free drink. Low in sugars and calories, it is rich in essential electrolytes and vitamins. Dubbed the “fluid of life,” coconut is safe for everyone to drink fresh from the nut. As the Hawaiians say, coconut water is “dew from the heavens”[1].
First up, a surprising fact—most coconut farmers don’t bother with pesticides or fertilizers. Why? Because coconuts are the Chuck Norris of the plant world—they thrive without extra help. So, if you’re paying extra for that “organic” label, you might want to rethink it. Coconuts naturally grow strong and healthy without chemical assistance, making the “organic” label less critical than you might think.
But don’t go ditching organic just yet. While pesticides may not be a concern, pollution can be. Studies, like one from India, have shown that pollutants can seep into coconuts, particularly in areas with industrial contamination. Not great news for your tropical drink.
Now, let’s talk taste. Organic coconut products often pack a richer flavor, much like the difference between a mediocre piña colada and one that transports you to a beach paradise. Plus, organic farming is kinder to the environment, promoting biodiversity and reducing carbon footprints—something Mother Earth certainly appreciates. But here’s the catch—organic coconuts come at a premium. Is the price hike worth it? That depends on how much you value that extra flavor and the feel-good factor of supporting sustainable farming. Organic methods avoid synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, benefiting both the environment and the workers in the fields.
No matter which side you choose, both organic and non-organic coconuts are nutritional powerhouses. The choice is yours, but rest assured, either way, you’re indulging in a taste of paradise. So, next time you’re picking out coconuts, consider whether you want to splurge for organic or go with the natural resilience of conventional ones. Whatever you choose, you’re in for a coco-nutty treat! Remember, your choices matter—not just for your health, but for the planet. So enjoy your coconut, and know that with each one, you’re contributing to a more sustainable future. One coconut at a time!

Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day Just as one doesn’t run a marathon after a decade of couch surfing, there’s no need to become an eco-warrior overnight. Start small. Replace one meal a week with a plant-based option. Perhaps a Meatless Monday? Or as we like to call it, Plantastic Monday!
Swap to Save Simple substitutions can yield significant results. Swap out beef for lentils in your hearty chili recipe. Not only will you conserve water and reduce emissions, but you might also discover a new favorite dish.
Vegetables Are Your Allies If you find vegetables mundane, you’ve been mingling with the wrong crowd. From roasted Brussels sprouts that taste like candy to spicy cauliflower wings, the plant kingdom is bursting with flavors that can transform any meal into a culinary delight.
Go Local or Go Home Buying local isn’t just for hipsters. Local produce is fresher, supports regional farmers, and has a smaller carbon footprint. Plus, farmers’ markets are the perfect setting for a romantic meet-cute over a basket of organic tomatoes.
Love Your Leftovers Channel your inner chef and turn those leftovers into gourmet meals. That half-eaten roast chicken? Meet your new best friend, chicken soup. Those wilted veggies? Stir-fry them into a masterpiece. The goal is zero waste, folks.
Get Creative with Scraps Before tossing carrot tops or broccoli stems, think again. Carrot tops make a fantastic pesto, and broccoli stems? Perfect for a crunchy slaw. Who knew being eco-friendly could be so gourmet?
The Flexitarian Revolution You don’t have to go full vegan to make a difference. Embrace the flexitarian lifestyle by reducing meat intake and enjoying more plant-based meals. Think of it as diet diversification. You get the best of both worlds, like Hannah Montana but with food.
Quality Over Quantity When you do indulge in meat, make it count. Choose high-quality, ethically-sourced options. It’s better for the planet, the animals, and your palate. Trust us, that grass-fed steak will taste infinitely better when you know it’s part of a sustainable system.
Sustainable Seafood Choices If you adore seafood, ensure your choices are ocean-friendly. Look for sustainably caught or farmed options. Apps like Seafood Watch can guide you to environmentally responsible picks, so you can enjoy your sushi guilt-free.
Mussels and Oysters: The Unsung Heroes Mussels and oysters are not only delicious but also fantastic for the environment. They filter water and require minimal resources to farm. Plus, they’re the perfect excuse for a fancy date night at home.
Eat with Intention Slow down and savor your meals. Mindful eating helps you appreciate your food, reduce waste, and make healthier choices. It’s like meditation, but tastier and with less sitting still.
Connect with Your Food Learn where your food comes from and how it’s produced. Whether visiting a local farm or reading up on sustainable practices, connecting with your food helps you make more informed choices.
Be an Eco-Influencer Share your sustainable food journey with friends and family. Host a plant-based dinner party, post your veggie-packed meals on social media, or casually drop fun facts about quinoa at your next brunch. Your enthusiasm might inspire others to join the movement.
Join a Community Find like-minded individuals on the path to sustainability. Join online forums, local groups, or community gardens. Support and camaraderie can make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.
Transitioning to a more sustainable diet isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Every small step you take helps make a big impact on the planet. So, grab your kale, hug a carrot, and join us in making the world a tastier, greener place—one delicious bite at a time. Bon appétit!

The post How Magnesium Can Alter Your Brain: A Guide first appeared on Alter 🍏.

In the grand orchestra of nutrition, magnesium is the steady, reliable drummer that keeps everything in rhythm. Yet, despite its crucial role in maintaining bodily harmony, many people don’t get enough magnesium in their diet—falling short of the recommended Daily Value (DV) of 420 milligrams (mg). This essential mineral is required for muscle and nerve function, maintaining heart rhythm, building strong bones, and fueling energy production. Magnesium is also a crucial co-factor in more than 300 enzymes involved in nearly every aspect of metabolism: from muscle contraction and protein synthesis to the storage and release of hormones and neurotransmitters, as well as the energy exchange in the respiratory chain.
But here’s the exciting part—getting enough magnesium can have a profound impact on your health and well-being. Not only does magnesium strengthen bones and potentially reduce the risk of osteoporosis, but it’s also scientifically proven to reduce muscle fatigue after exercise, giving your recovery a well-deserved boost. And if that’s not enough, adequate magnesium intake may even help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety by elevating levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that soothes the nervous system. A 2023 meta-analysis found a significant decline in depression scores with magnesium supplementation.
Magnesium isn’t just another mineral; it’s a vital partner in your body’s quest for optimal health, helping you feel more energized, balanced, and resilient.
If you’re looking to up your magnesium game, your diet is a great place to start. And the good news is, nature has packed this essential mineral into a variety of delicious, healthy foods. Incorporating more magnesium-rich foods into your daily meals is a simple yet effective way to enhance your well-being.
When it comes to magnesium per 100 calories, leafy greens are the undisputed champions. Spinach reigns supreme with a whopping 378.3 mg of magnesium per 100 kcal. Not only is it loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, but it’s also a good source of iron and folate—all while being low in carbs. Kale isn’t far behind, offering 203.5 mg of magnesium per 100 kcal. This leafy green is not just a magnesium source; it’s also a vitamin A, C, and K superstar, with added bonuses of calcium, potassium, and manganese.
Zucchini, lettuce, and cucumber also bring their own unique benefits to the table. Zucchini, for instance, offers 105.5 mg of magnesium per 100 kcal and is a solid source of vitamin C, vitamin B9 (folate), and potassium. Meanwhile, lettuce provides 108.3 mg of magnesium per 100 kcal, and cucumber, though lower on the magnesium scale with 86.7 mg per 100 kcal, is an obvious low-calorie option that’s great for hydration.
Nuts aren’t just a satisfying snack; they’re also magnesium gold mines. Pumpkin seeds top the list with 550 mg of magnesium per 100g—equivalent to 98.4 mg per 100 kcal. Beyond magnesium, they’re packed with zinc, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein, making them a true superfood.
Almonds are another excellent option, offering 270 mg of magnesium per 100g. These nuts are rich in vitamin E, healthy monounsaturated fats, and fiber, while being low in sugar. Brazilian nuts, with 254 mg of magnesium per 100g, may not match almonds in magnesium density, but they are incredibly high in selenium, an important micronutrient that’s hard to find in other foods.
While legumes and grains may not be as magnesium-dense as leafy greens or nuts, they’re usually consumed in larger quantities, making them significant contributors to your daily magnesium intake. Soybeans, for example, provide 86 mg of magnesium per 100g (50 mg per 100 kcal) and are high in protein and isoflavones, compounds that have various health benefits. Black beans, with 70 mg of magnesium per 100g, are a perfect taco filling that adds a magnesium boost to your meal.
And let’s not forget avocados—often classified as a fruit but nutritionally closer to a vegetable or nut. While they offer a more modest 29 mg of magnesium per 100g (18.1 mg per 100 kcal), avocados are high in potassium, vitamins K, C, and B6, and healthy monounsaturated fats, all wrapped up in a creamy, delicious package.
Incorporating magnesium-rich foods into your diet isn’t just a step toward meeting the DV; it’s a stride toward a healthier, more vibrant you. From leafy greens and nuts to legumes and grains, these foods are not only delicious but also packed with the essential magnesium your body craves. So the next time you’re planning a meal, remember: your body is drumming to the beat of magnesium, and it’s time to join the band!
After mastering magnesium-rich foods, you might still find yourself wanting a little extra boost—enter magnesium supplements. But with so many options on the market, it can be tricky to know which one is right for you. Let’s dive into the different types of magnesium supplements, their working principles, advantages, disadvantages, and who they’re best suited for.
Magnesium citrate is a superstar when it comes to bioavailability, meaning your body can absorb and use it more efficiently than most other forms. This supplement is an organic salt formed from magnesium and citric acid, a compound naturally found in citrus fruits. Thanks to its high solubility, magnesium citrate is often available as a drinkable solution, making it easy to consume. It’s particularly popular for treating constipation due to its mild laxative effect.
Working Principle: Magnesium citrate’s high solubility ensures it is quickly absorbed in the digestive tract, allowing it to work effectively and efficiently.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Best For: Those seeking quick magnesium absorption, especially if constipation relief is also a goal. It’s a great option for individuals who prefer taking their supplements in a drinkable form.
If you’re looking to improve sleep quality, magnesium glycinate might be your best bet. This form combines magnesium with glycine, an amino acid known for its calming properties. Glycine enhances brain function and memory while promoting better sleep, making this supplement a dual-purpose powerhouse. Plus, magnesium glycinate is gentle on the digestive system, making it a great choice for those with sensitive stomachs.
Working Principle: The combination of magnesium with glycine enhances not only magnesium absorption but also the uptake of glycine, which in turn supports brain function, memory, and relaxation.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Best For: Individuals looking to improve sleep quality, enhance cognitive function, or avoid digestive discomfort. It’s particularly suited for those with a sensitive digestive system or those wanting to benefit from glycine’s calming effects.
Magnesium L-threonate is a relatively new player in the magnesium supplement market, but it’s quickly gaining recognition for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. This unique feature makes it particularly effective at boosting brain function and memory. A recent study confirmed its benefits for cognitive health and affirmed its safety [6][7]. In addition to magnesium, this supplement also helps with the uptake of threonine, an essential amino acid that supports the immune and nervous systems.
Working Principle: Magnesium L-threonate’s ability to cross the blood-brain barrier makes it exceptionally effective for improving cognitive function. Threonine, part of the compound, further supports nervous system health.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Best For: Individuals focused on enhancing cognitive function, memory, and overall brain health. It’s ideal for those interested in the potential neurological benefits of magnesium supplementation.
Magnesium oxide is one of the most common forms found in magnesium supplements, largely due to its low cost. However, it has a much lower bioavailability compared to other forms, meaning your body absorbs less of it. Despite this, it’s often used as a general supplement and for treating heartburn or indigestion due to its alkaline nature.
Working Principle: Magnesium oxide offers a basic form of magnesium that is cost-effective, but with lower absorption rates, requiring higher doses to achieve the same benefits as more bioavailable forms.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
Best For: Those on a budget looking for a general magnesium supplement or needing relief from heartburn or indigestion. It’s also suitable for individuals who are not concerned about bioavailability or require only small doses of magnesium.
When it comes to magnesium supplementation, the best choice depends on your individual health goals. Whether you’re looking to relieve constipation with magnesium citrate, enhance sleep with magnesium glycinate, boost brain function with magnesium L-threonate, or simply find a cost-effective option with magnesium oxide, there’s a supplement tailored to your needs.
Whether you’re getting your magnesium from food or supplements, ensuring adequate intake of this essential mineral can be a game-changer for your health. From better sleep and sharper thinking to smoother digestion and stronger bones, there’s a magnesium supplement out there that’s perfect for you. Choose wisely, and your body will thank you!

In the world of luxury grocery shopping, Erewhon is making waves and catching eyes. You’ve probably seen it mentioned by health influencers, spotted it on Instagram, or passed by its sleek storefronts in Los Angeles. But what exactly is Erewhon, and why is it the trendy grocery store everyone’s buzzing about? Let’s dive into the details of this high-end grocery destination.
A Little History: What is Erewhon?
Erewhon isn’t just a modern grocery store; it takes its name from Samuel Butler’s 19th-century satirical novel “Erewhon,” an anagram of “nowhere” hinting at a utopian society. Founded in 1968 as a health food store in Boston, Erewhon has since moved to Los Angeles, where it has evolved into a luxury grocery store catering to health enthusiasts and wellness aficionados.
What Makes Erewhon Different?
The Luxury Grocery Experience: Walking into Erewhon feels like stepping into a high-end boutique rather than a traditional grocery store. With minimalist design and polished wood accents, it offers an exclusive shopping experience where you’re not just buying groceries but indulging in luxury.
Ultra-Healthy and Organic Products: Erewhon is renowned for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. It offers a range of products free from artificial ingredients and GMOs, including organic produce, grass-fed meats, and gluten-free snacks. It’s a paradise for those prioritizing clean eating.
Innovative Prepared Foods: Erewhon’s prepared foods section is legendary. Featuring gourmet, health-conscious dishes such as turmeric-infused cauliflower and vegan kale Caesar salads, it’s a hub for Instagrammable and delicious meals.

Why is Erewhon So Popular?
Erewhon’s popularity is driven by several factors. Its alignment with the health and wellness trend in Los Angeles, combined with celebrity endorsements and social media buzz, has solidified its status as a cultural phenomenon. Celebrities and influencers frequent Erewhon, and its visually stunning displays make it a favorite on social media.
The Downside: Luxury Comes at a Price
With its luxury status comes a hefty price tag. Erewhon’s high costs have sparked debates about accessibility, making it more of a splurge than a regular grocery run for many.
The Future of Erewhon
Erewhon’s future looks promising, with its growing popularity and expanding locations. As the wellness movement continues, Erewhon is set to maintain its position as a leader in luxury health food stores.
Conclusion: Is Erewhon Worth the Hype?

Whether you’re visiting to spot a celebrity or simply to explore luxury health foods, Erewhon provides a distinct and high-end grocery experience. Meal Planning for Budget-Friendly Sustainability
Meal planning isn’t just for fitness buffs or obsessive organizers—it’s essential for anyone aiming to eat sustainably on a budget. By planning your meals in advance, you can ensure that every item you buy gets used, reducing food waste and saving money. Plus, it helps you avoid last-minute takeout, which is often neither sustainable nor cost-effective.
Create a Shopping List
Develop a shopping list based on your meal plan and stick to it. Impulse buys can wreck both your budget and your sustainable eating goals. A list helps keep you focused and less tempted by enticing but not-so-sustainable processed foods.
Bulk Buying Basics
Grains, beans, lentils, and pasta are your best friends when eating sustainably on a budget. These items are affordable, have a long shelf life, and are versatile enough for various dishes. Buying them in bulk reduces packaging waste and usually cuts down on costs.
Bulk Bin Benefits
Shopping in bulk allows you to buy only what you need, saving money and reducing waste. Check out bulk bins for staples like rice, oats, nuts, and dried fruits. Not only do they often cost less per unit, but you also save on the environmental impact of packaging.
Power of Plant-Based Foods
Beans, lentils, chickpeas, and tofu are not only nutritious but also inexpensive sources of protein. They have a lower environmental impact compared to animal proteins and can be used in various delicious recipes. Think hearty lentil soups, chickpea curries, and black bean tacos. The options are endless and cost-effective!
Cut Down on Meat
You don’t have to become a full-time vegetarian to eat sustainably. Try incorporating meatless meals a few times a week. This reduces your carbon footprint and cuts down your grocery bill. When you do buy meat, opt for quality over quantity. A smaller amount of sustainably-sourced meat can go a long way in a well-prepared dish.
Seasonal Savings
Seasonal fruits and vegetables are usually cheaper and fresher than their out-of-season counterparts. They don’t require extensive travel, reducing their carbon footprint. Plus, eating with the seasons adds variety to your diet and can be a fun way to try new recipes.
Support Local Farmers
Local farmers’ markets or community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs often offer fresh produce at reasonable prices. Buying locally reduces the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation and supports your local economy. Check out markets towards the end of the day for potential discounts on produce that farmers don’t want to take back home.
Creative Leftovers
Get creative with leftovers to prevent food waste. Last night’s roasted vegetables can become today’s veggie wrap or a topping for a grain bowl. Overripe bananas? Perfect for baking or smoothies. Use what you have before buying more, and you’ll save both food and money.
Utilize Your Freezer
Freeze leftovers, vegetables that are about to go bad, or bulk purchases like meat and bread. Freezing extends the shelf life of food, prevents waste, and allows you to buy items when they’re on sale without worrying about them spoiling.
Homemade and Sustainable
Making things from scratch is often cheaper and more sustainable than buying pre-packaged items. Consider baking your own bread, making your own salad dressings, or cooking up a big batch of soup to freeze. Not only do you control the ingredients, but you also reduce packaging waste.
Grow Your Own
Even if you don’t have a garden, you can grow herbs on a windowsill or balcony. Fresh herbs can be expensive, but a small pot of basil or mint can go a long way. Growing your own food, even on a small scale, is rewarding and cost-effective.
Use Coupons and Sales
Don’t shy away from using coupons or taking advantage of sales. Stock up on non-perishable items when they’re on sale. Just make sure the items are things you will actually use to avoid waste.
Join Store Loyalty Programs
Many grocery stores offer loyalty programs that provide discounts, coupons, or rewards. Sign up for these programs to save money on your grocery bill. Combine them with sales, and you can make your budget go further.
Smart Seafood Choices
If you enjoy seafood, opt for sustainable choices. Look for certifications like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label or consult resources like the Seafood Watch app. Sustainable seafood doesn’t have to be expensive. Look for less popular fish varieties that are often more affordable and just as delicious.
Eating sustainably on a tight budget is all about making smart, thoughtful choices. You don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. Start with small changes, like planning your meals, reducing food waste, and embracing plant-based proteins. Each step you take not only helps your wallet but also contributes to a healthier planet.
Remember, sustainability is a journey, not a destination. By making conscious decisions about what we eat, we can all play a part in creating a more sustainable future—one delicious, budget-friendly meal at a time!
